Shopping for a new, high-quality, but affordable comfort mattress can be an extremely daunting endeavor. How are we really supposed to know what is comfortable and spine-friendly? Well you must keep several factors in mind when setting out to buy a new comfort mattress. |
|
|
Mattresses are compromised of two factors: support and comfort. These factors are equally important in determining which comfort mattress you should buy:
Most mattresses are innerspring mattresses, using inner springs or coils as the main source of the support. The gauge of these coils determines firmness and support. A mattress should have a sufficient number of coils in order to provide necessary support and allow for the spine to curve naturally and comfortably.
The firmness of the mattress is also an important factor in selecting a comfort mattress. Firmer mattresses are generally better for the spine, however, if it is too firm, it can end up hurting more than helping. The overly-firm mattress can cause pain in pressure points and further aggravate any preexisting conditions.
Although firm mattresses often provide better support, they are not necessary to providing the most restful sleep and optimum comfort for the individual. If softer mattresses or water beds are more comfortable, then those beds will often help you sleep well and wake up feeling more refreshed. The best way to find out what firmness level is right for you is to sleep on the mattress overnight, if possible. This way you will be able to find out if the mattress is a good fit for you.
What about air mattresses and foam mattresses, you ask? Well, although not as conventional as the traditional innerspring mattresses, you can find many high-quality versions of these mattresses that provide the same support and comfort for nearly the same price as your run-of-the-mill spring mattress.
Do not be fooled by the air mattresses infamous reputation as a last-minute makeshift bed for guest or a companion for a camping trip. Air mattresses designed specifically for the bedroom cost nearly the same as inner-spring mattresses. Instead of an array of coils to provide support, an air mattress uses one or more air chambers. An added benefit that the air mattress boasts is the ability of adjusting the firmness of the mattress to allow for the optimum comfort of the buyer.
Foam mattresses on the other hand, use shape-conforming latex or viscoelastic memory foam for support. They are generally hypoallergenic and range widely in price as foam varies in quality. Foam mattresses can provide excellent support for your back as well, as it conforms to the natural form of your body.
With all these factors, keep in mind that there is no mattress that is suitable for everyone. Comfort always comes down to personal preference. Every individual requires a different mattress as there are a number of different back ailments and comfort levels. However, keeping these pointers in mind will allow for a more confident and educated choice when choosing a new comfort mattress. |

I hurt my back about 20 years ago and have had a hard time sleeping ever sense. I woke in the mornings sore and stiff. I did all the right things like going to chiropractors and doing stretches and back exercises with little relief. |

I have bought firm mattresses and soft mattresses and all the in between mattresses and still found myself tossing and turning. Usually after two or three hours of restless sleep, I had to get out of bed and walk around then finally to try to sleep on the couch or in a chair. Let's face it that was unhealthy for me and not very good on my marriage.
A few months ago I visited a friend and slept in her spare bedroom. I couldn't believe it when I woke up it was daylight. I had slept for 10 hours straight! That is more that I usually sleep in 2-3 days! As I lay in bed letting my eyes focus, and stretching, I realized that my back didn't hurt. I jumped out of bed and went and asked her what kind of mattress she had, she smiled and said it was a Memory Mattress.
She then informed me that her husband has back trouble too and they had tried out a memory mattress and it worked so great for him that they replaced every mattress in the house with memory mattresses because of the benefits. He had been one who got up and down several times a night, which kept her awake too.
On my way home from their house that weekend, I went to a well known furniture store and bought my own memory mattress. I did not tell my husband and had it delivered the next day after he left for work. He laid down that night and said the bed was so comfortable and asked what I had done to it. I told him I just flipped the mattress. I wanted to see if he noticed the benefits of our new memory mattress.
In the morning he woke me up shocked that not only was I still in our bed, but still asleep even. He said that his body felt great, no regular aches and pains. He knew I had done more than just flipped the mattress, so I explained that I had purchased yet another mattress. He started to roll his eyes until I reminded him I was still in bed for the first time since we got married.
We absolutely love our new memory mattress and all the benefits it has provided. I now sleep a minimum of 8 hours per night and wake up with out back pain. For the first time since my husband and I got married we sleep together every night, all night. I have suggested the memory mattress to everyone I know. Family members with out back issues that have bought one say they have never slept so good. We will never go back to a regular mattress again.

There is no denying the fact that the mattress we sleep on at night has a direct effect on how we feel in the morning. Anyone who has spent the night at a hotel or a relative's house with a mattress that is either too firm or too soft can attest to this reality. We spend about 30% of our lifetime in bed, so why not make this time comfortable? Check out the benefits of owning and using a comfort mattress: |
|
The most obvious benefit of using a comfort mattress is, well, comfort. This type of mattress is neither too firm nor too soft, so it is usually comfortable for most people. Many of them have a soft top to increase the comfort level. If you have had a hard day working, consider how your body will feel at night when you pull back the covers and crawl onto a mattress that only feels great on your body.
Something else to consider is how your body feels when you wake up in the morning. People can actually sleep on anything--the couch, the carpet, hard floor, sleeping bag. But the question is, how do you feel the morning after? If it is anything other than great, then a comfort mattress may be for you.
Let's think long-term here. Many people suffer from chronic back pain, but how many consider whether it is their mattress? Decide whether your mattress is helping or hindering your back pain. If it is a hindrance, then it might be time to think about getting a comfort mattress. Is your health important enough to make changes in your mattress if necessary? Both too soft mattresses and too firm mattresses can cause back pain upon waking and throughout the day. You may want to consult a physician on what kind of mattress is right for your personal health situation.
A benefit sometimes not thought of is the difference between comfort mattresses and your high-end adjustable mattresses. Besides the obvious cost differences that can make adjustable mattresses out of reach for many people, there is also the possibility of something breaking down and having to be repaired. When your mattress is just comfortable all the time without having to be set or moved, then you have added convenience to your life and no repair bills ever.
For most people, a comfort mattress is the way to go--both economically and health-wise.

A memory mattress or memory foam mattress echoes the body and evenly distributes body weight cushioning pressure areas and supporting spinal alignment. A popular commercial shows a person jumping up and down on a bed, yet a glass of wine remains undisturbed. This technology produces a better nights rest by providing a higher degree of comfort than traditional mattresses.

But not all foam mattresses are alike. There are specific things to look for when buying a memory mattress.
Foam density is rated at 3,5, and 6 pounds, the higher the number, the denser the foam, and the more support the mattress will provide. Some labels may include a density identification number. Materials ranging from polyurethane foam to NASA foam can be used in manufacturing. NASA foam is the highest rated and is the best quality. Other filler materials can added to give a mattress its thickness.
Manufacturers make memory mattress toppers as well as whole memory mattresses. Toppers can be anywhere from 1.5 to 4 inches thick. A consumer needs to consider the type of foam from which a topper is constructed. The ingredient or ingredients used will give you an indication of durability and longevity.
Full memory mattresses come in single, double, queen and king sizes with thicknesses that range from 7.5 inches to 17 inches. Examine the label for what materials are used. The mattress can be constructed from one type of pure foam, a combination of foam materials or foam and other fillers.
Whether a memory mattress can be cleaned is another indicator of its quality. Inexpensive foam is considered ruined if stained because it can not be laundered in any way. Does the mattress or topper come with a removable cover that provides protection and is washable?
The type and duration of warranty is another key to quality. Does the mattress or topper have a warranty? Is the warranty for 4years or 20 years? Is the warranty included in the retail price or is this an additional cost? What does the warranty cover?
Brand name memory mattresses are traditionally higher priced. There are factory outlets that sell them at a reduced cost. Compare the quality of name brand mattresses with lesser known models when shopping for a new bed. Read the labels and size up the type of materials used, care instructions and warranties offered in relation to retail price.
